Permax Side Effects
Permax
Permax (pergolide mesylate) has been on the market since
1989. Permax was developed by Eli Lilly and is now manufactured
and marketed by Amarin Corporation in San Francisco. Since
Permax was approved for treatment of Parkinson's disease patients,
more than 500,000 people have taken the drug.
Permax is referred to as a dopamine agonist, which describes
the way in which it works inside the body. Dopamine agonists
are a promising category of drugs used to treat disease. Permax is most commonly
used in the treatment of the early stages of Parkinson's disease,
and is especially
effective in patients not previously treated for the disease.
People whose legs jump, itch, tingle or feel otherwise restless
at night - and for some, throughout the day - may also get
relief from pergolide.
Permax Side Effects
Permax side effects include:
- nervous
system complaints, including involuntary spasms, sleepiness,
hallucinations, dizziness, and insomnia
- digestive
complaints, including nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and
indigestion
- respiratory
system complaints, such as a runny nose
The FDA has contacted Eli Lilly about the latest reports
of heart valve disease. It has recommended that the company
change the labeling of pergolide to add information about
occurrences of valvular heart disease in the warnings section
of the label.
