Rezulin
Rezulin was prescribed to over 600,000 patients in the
United States. 90 of these patients have suffered liver damage,
10 required liver transplants and 63 have died. Patients on
Rezulin developed a variety of side effects including
nausea, vomiting, dark urine, clay-colored stools, abdominal
pain, fatigue, anorexia, and jaundice. These are all indications
of liver disease. The FDA was forced to remove Rezulin
from the market in March 2000 due to the overwhelming evidence
that it is extremely harmful to the liver.
Manufactured by Parke-Davis, a division of Pfizer, Rezulin
is an oral medication that was prescribed for patients
with Type II, or adult-onset diabetes. The drug was generally
recommended for patients whose blood sugar levels did not
adequately improve with insulin injections. Often, it was
prescribed in combination with other types of therapies, such
as sulfonylurea pills, metformin and/or insulin injections
in an attempt to balance the level of insulin in the body.
Rezulin Side Effects
Patients with Type II diabetes are able to produce insulin,
but their bodies are unable to use the chemical properly.
As a result, these patients have too much sugar stored in
their bodies. This condition is known as hyperglycemia. Rezulin,
which is also referred to by its generic name, troglitazone,
was designed to combat the dangers caused by hyperglycemia
by suppressing the secretion of insulin by the liver. The
body's organs are better able to use the available insulin
when the correct amount is produced. Thus, Rezulin has
the capability to restore the bodys sensitivity to insulin
by lowering sugar levels in the blood. Unfortunately, while
Rezulin does help to solve one medical condition, it
can also cause very serious side effects. Rezulin has
been found to trigger extensive, and in some cases life-threatening,
liver complications.
